Intertextually, is when you take inspiration from something, for example a text or scene, and reshape or recreate that text or scene with own meaning and perception. Intertextuality may be used as an allusion and influence. Within thrillers many scenes are intertextual, one example is the shower scene from 1960's psycho. Since this film, many have used the scene intertextually, whether as parodies or as references and re-workings.
In Oriental-Horror, Intertextuality is also commonly used from old folklore, Totsuya Kaidan which may well be one of the most famous Japanese folklore tales has been used over 30 times intertextually for J-Horror. This image is the image characters from Ju-on: The Grudge and Ringu are based on.
The character Oiwa, wears a white burial Kimono (as is believed to be what she wore when she was buried), She is revengeful, pale, and has long black hair, with a droopy eye. Just like Sadako Yamamure in Japanese original of the ring, Ringu.
The Japanese folklore tale may influence our own thriller opening with the use of 怨霊(Onryō) as one of our characters.
